Board tells Mash to apologize, confirm senator appointments

Associated Student Government’s Judicial Board ordered Nicole Mash, ASG’s executive vice president, to apologize for inappropriately appointing senators to the Executive Committee, which Mash chairs.

Mash, a Weinberg senior, issued a brief apology to the Senate at Wednesday’s meeting. She was unavailable for comment Thursday.

Amnesty International senator Gia DiGiacobbe filed charges last week after Mash appointed Parrish Whitaker to the Executive Committee. DiGiacobbe said Mash violated the student group guidelines by appointing Whitaker without announcing a vacancy to the Senate or waiting for senators to approve him with a vote.

“The issue is not about one isolated incident,” said DiGiacobbe, an Education sophomore. “This is about Senate’s oversight in appointments made by the Executive Committee and the Student Activities Finance Board.”

The Judicial Board decision, endorsed by six justices, mandates that Whitaker be approved by Senate.

The decision also states that confirmations will be constitutional only when put to a vote, and that vacancies on the Executive Committee must be announced to Senate before appointments are made.

“I got exactly what I petitioned for — I got an apology, and I got Parrish’s confirmation,” DiGiacobbe said.

Mitch Holzrichter, chief justice of ASG’s judicial branch, said the decision ensures fairness and sets a positive example for good government.

“We wanted to make sure senators knew of their rights in the confirmation process,” said Mitch Holzrichter, a Weinberg sophomore. “We hope this will set a good precedent for the future.”
