No longer ‘Vagrant’

Every day is a party for The Anniversary. Coming off the warm reception of its sophomore album, Your Majesty, released in 2002 on typically punk-emo label Vagrant, the Kansas quintet is stretching boundaries and hopping genres. While its debut, Designing a Nervous Breakdown, fit neatly into the emo category of pop music, Your Majesty is a musical free-for-all that mixes the Pixies and Lush with hints of funk and ’80s hair metal.

While the band’s sound is eclectic, it’s the synth-pop vibe and the three-part harmonies of singers Adrianne Pope, Josh Berwanger and Justin Roelofs that distinguish The Anniversary from label mates Dashboard Confessional and the Get Up Kids.

At last Saturday’s Metro show the group plowed through a visually and aurally gorgeous set. Focusing on tracks from Your Majesty, the group also debuted a few new songs. Before the show, Pope and drummer Christian Jankowski discussed their guilty-pleasures, recording in Chicago and the struggle to prove they’re not just another emo band.

nyou: I hear that you guys use a lot of pyrotechnics throughout your set, what made you decide to do that?

Adrianne Pope: (Laughs) We’ve done that a lot on previous tours but we’re not doing that anymore. It just spawned out of our love for putting on an insane show. The group grew up with metal and it’s just a fascination we have.

nyou: Is there a song that you particularly like to perform?

AP: We are loving some of our new songs. We have a studio set up at Justin’s house and we did record a little at my house. We rehearse three days a week and we pretty much record every day and write music.
