Freshman Adam Schaechterle has learned a lot all year, and this weekend he learned what it feels like to lose the deciding match against a top-ranked team.
“I just don’t know what to say, but I’m getting tired of learning lessons,” he said. “How do you win four first sets and then go 1-3?”
Schaechterle’s loss gave No. 17 Alabama (3-0) the fourth point on its way to a 5-2 victory over the Northwestern men’s tennis team Saturday at the Combe Tennis Center.
NU’s Jackie Jenkins and Alabama’s Stephen Mitchell, the last match on the court, had barely started the third set when Alabama’s Christian Broderson finished off Schaechterle. That left the Wildcats sitting dejectedly on the sideline watching Jenkins fight for his match and trying to comprehend the overall defeat.
