NU prepares for delayed freshman

Updated at 2:40 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12

As classes resumed on the Chicago Campus today, Northwestern officials announced adjustments to New Student Week activities to accommodate freshman who are planning to fly to Chicago.

“We anticipate that many of our new students may need to take additional time in arriving, so we are making the necessary arrangements to provide them assistance once they do arrive,” said University President Henry Bienen in a statement released Wednesday.

NU is asking students who will arrive late to call their schools’ assistant deans to reschedule registration times, placement tests and advising appointments. The university also plans to schedule make-up sessions for Responsibilities seminars, which are required for all new students and address campus safety.

Resident Assistants will be on duty every hour during New Student Week to help freshman move into their rooms. Students who arrive late should contact their dorm’s RA to receive important dorm information.

Students can continue to access information about New Student Week through a hotline at (847) 467-8910 or at the Web site www.wildcats.northwestern.edu/nsw.

Campus clergy members are planning services today and later this week for students and Evanston residents who want to talk about Tuesday’s attacks.

Special services held later today include:

• 4:30 p.m. Mass at the Sheil Catholic Center

• 6:30 p.m. service at the Chabad House

• 7:00 p.m. informal interfaith service at Alice Millar Chapel

The NCAA is holding discussions on whether to postpone weekend athletic events. NU is scheduled to play Navy on Saturday, but university officials haven’t decided whether to postpone the game.

Several other athletic events have been canceled, including Wednesday men’s soccer match at Valparaiso University and a field hockey tournament at Storrs, Conn.

Bienen said students, faculty and staff members are encouraged to contact the university’s Counseling and Psychological Service for assistance dealing with grief or shock. Counselors can be reached during business hours at (847) 491-2151 and after hours at (847) 491-8100.

Classes for NU’s Medical School, Law School and School of Continuing Studies resumed this morning after they were canceled Tuesday.

“Things are back to normal at this point, so we’re going through with what are normal activities,” said Charles Loebbaka, NU spokesman.
