D65 Board of Education to review contracts, textbooks

Board members will consider contract renewals and bids at tonight’s Evanston/Skokie School District 65 Board of Education meeting.

The board’s contracts with Winkels Transportation bus service and the Childcare Network of Evanston, a liaison between the school district and private childcare providers, are up for approval.

The district has used Winkels for about 25 years and will likely renew the contract, said John Chatz, the board’s vice president. The board had previously negotiated Winkel’s requested 4 percent contract increase down to 3 percent.

Board members will also decide whether to renew its contract with CNE. At its last meeting, the board discussed changes in the contract, which will cost an estimated $81,468 over the next year.

This is more than $28,000 less than CNE’s current contract, reflecting reduced services. Because of a statewide shift from site-administered contracts to child care certificates, CNE will no longer determine families’ eligibility for child-care subsidies, but will continue its other services, Chatz said.

In another agenda item, the board may decide to raise fees for after-school child care. If it is implemented, the increase would be about $5, Chatz said.

At tonight’s meeting, the board will also:

_Ѣ Decide whether to upgrade middle school social studies textbooks. The books have not been updated for five years, Chatz said. He also said the district might change book publishers.

_Ѣ Award contracts for paving, countertop replacement and roofing work at four schools in addition to bids for art and bathroom supplies.

_Ѣ Hear presentations from several teachers about their annual summer curriculum projects.

The board meets tonight at 7 p.m. at King Lab School, 2424 Lake St.
