U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston) is backing Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton in the Democratic primary race to represent Illinois in the U.S. Senate.
Stratton is facing off against U.S. Reps. Robin Kelly (D-Matteson) and Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Schaumburg) to succeed U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.). Durbin, the Senate Democratic whip, is retiring after 44 years in Congress.
Schakowsky joins other Illinois politicians, including Gov. JB Pritzker, U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) and U.S. Reps. Danny Davis (D-Chicago), Jesús “Chuy” García (D-Chicago) and Eric Sorensen (D-Moline), in endorsing Stratton.
“Juliana Stratton is a progressive fighter who will go to the mat to defend reproductive freedom, healthcare, and immigrant rights,” Schakowsky wrote in a statement Stratton posted to social media Monday. “She has represented the entire state of Illinois with the grit and tenacity that we need in Washington.”
Krishnamoorthi had been the frontrunner since last year, but his lead has faltered in recent weeks as Stratton has surged in the polls. Data from Public Policy Polling in late February showed a nine-point swing toward Stratton in the past month, putting Krishnamoorthi’s lead within the margin of error.
The primary election will be held March 17.
