For the sixth year in a row, the Evanston community has voted Bennison’s Bakery the best place to grab baked goods.
When passersby spot the bakery’s glowing corner sign on the intersection of Maple Avenue and Davis Street, they know they can step inside for everything from delicate French macarons to buttery Danish pastries and crusty European-style loaves.
The bakery, founded by Wisconsin baker Larry Bennison, first opened its doors in 1938. Guy Downer purchased the shop in 1968, and it has remained family-run under Jory Downer.
Bennison’s reputation extends beyond Evanston. In 2005, Downer was part of the U.S. team that won the Coupe du Monde de la Boulangerie, an international artisan bread competition.
Whether you’re looking for a king cake to celebrate Mardi Gras, a traditional princess torte to fix a craving, or a Bavarian pretzel just because, Bennison’s has you covered.
The bakery is also known for its annual Paczki Eating Contest, where contestants eat Polish-style donuts topped with sugars or filled with jams.
Six years running, Evanston’s sweet tooth has spoken, and it still belongs to Bennison’s.
