Northwestern Executive Vice President Craig Johnson (Weinberg ‘99, Kellogg ‘07) will join Northwestern Medicine as its executive vice president and chief operating officer starting June 5, NU announced in a Friday news release.

Launched in 2010, Northwestern Medicine is affiliated with the Feinberg School of Medicine and anchored by Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Northwestern Medicine includes 11 hospitals and over 200 locations in the Chicago area.

Johnson has been the University’s executive vice president since 2018. In the role, he facilitated NU’s business and financial operations in collaboration with the provost. He also directed the University’s strategic response to the pandemic, which included emergency prevention and mitigation. He will step down from the role as he takes on his new position.

Johnson worked in NU’s central budget office for 23 years. He then became Feinbergs vice dean in 2013 and its chief operating officer in 2016 — before assuming the role of NU’s executive vice president.“I will always be grateful for my time at Northwestern and for the people I have worked with here,” Johnson said in the release. “I have had the privilege to help this community of scholars and dedicated staff leave a lasting impact every day on our students and on our world.”

President Michael Schill commended Johnson’s leadership, particularly with managing the University’s finances. As executive vice president, Johnson helped oversee NU’s $2.4 billion yearly operating budget, as well as $702 million in sponsored research activity.

“Craig has been an extraordinary part of the leadership team at Northwestern University. His work in shepherding the University’s finances through a rocky period was critical in enabling us to emerge strong,” Schill said in the release. “Craig will always be an important part of our Northwestern family, and I look forward to working with him in his new role.”
