Evanston Police Department officers on Tuesday afternoon responded to a report of retail theft at Jewel-Osco, located at 1128 Chicago Ave..

The theft was reported by a 43-year-old man “who listed his address as the Jewel,” said Evanston police Cmdr. Ryan Glew.

Late Tuesday morning, the Evanston resident took two bottles of Jim Beam from the store. A witness gave a description of the man, who was located by officers at the corner of Greenleaf Street and Sherman Avenue. Officers brought a witness to the scene and were able to positively identify the man, Glew said.

The man claimed not to have stolen anything and was at the time empty-handed, but had hidden the liquor in an alley near the Jewel, Glew added.

Man attempts to ride CTA for free

EPD officers arrested a 27-year-old Evanston resident early Tuesday morning after he attempted to ride the CTA without paying for a ticket.

At around 1:13 a.m., the man pushed past the turnstiles and walked toward the stairs at the Davis CTA station, but was intercepted by a CTA attendant, Glew said.

The man “used profanities” toward the CTA attendant, who later came to the police station to file a complaint, Glew added.
