Two cars were stolen in separate instances within a half-mile of each other within the same time frame.

A blue 2005 Toyota Prius was stolen from the driveway of a house in the 1000 block of Hinman Avenue between Saturday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 8:30 a.m., Evanston police Cmdr. Joseph Dugan said. The owner told police the car was unlocked and there may have been a set of spare keys in the vehicle, Dugan said.

A white 2012 Audi was also stolen Sunday in the 400 block of Greenleaf Street, he said. A device on the car installed by the insurance company had information that the car was in motion at that time. The owner told police both sets of keys were accounted for, Dugan said.

The police do not know whether the thefts are related, he said.

Man charged with assault after disagreement over dog in apartment

A 53-year-old man was arrested Wednesday in connection with assaulting a neighbor who told the housing management company that the man was keeping a dog in his south Evanston apartment against housing rules.

The 47-year-old Evanston neighbor, who works for the company that manages the apartment, called police at about 5:30 p.m. after the man threatened him from his apartment in the 300 block of Callan Avenue, Dugan said. The man who owned the dog banged on his door and windows, threatening harm to his neighbor and his neighbor’s family, Dugan added.

The police charged the man with misdemeanor assault.
