Abby Steketee (SESP ’03) has been named the coach of the women’s swimming and diving team, the athletic department announced Friday. She replaces Jimmy Tierney, who left the team in April for undisclosed reasons after leading the program since 1994.

“I am truly honored to return home to Northwestern,” Steketee said in a news release. “It is thrilling to join the legacy of excellence at Northwestern, a place that shaped who I am today.”

Steketee’s only head coaching experience comes from Nevada, where she led the program for the past three years. In her final season, the team broke 12 school and four Mountain West conference records. Steketee was selected as the conference Coach of the Year in 2015.

Previously she coached swimming as a graduate assistant at West Virginia from 2004 to 2007 and as an assistant with both the men’s and women’s team at South Carolina from 2007 to 2011.

Steketee was not on the women’s swimming and diving team during her time at NU but was a member of the club crew team.
