School of Continuing Studies to change name

Northwestern trustees voted this week to change the name of the School of Continuing Studies to the School of Professional Studies.

The change will take effect Sept. 1 and is intended to reflect the college’s shift from offering mostly undergraduate programs to offering mostly post-graduate and professional programs.

“Our programs are overwhelmingly comprised of students in professional programs, and our long-term strategy is to continue to build professional program capacity, so our name should reflect the nature of what we teach,” Thomas Gibbons, the dean of the college, said in a news release.

The School of Continuing Studies offers evening and online classes to undergraduate, graduate, post-baccalaureate and professional students. It is geared toward working adults and other individuals whose schedules prevent them from attending school full time.

The college has changed names several times since it was established in 1933 as the University College.
