Updated: Man killed by Metra train near Main Street, death ruled a suicide

A 45-year-old man was fatally hit by a Metra train early this morning near Main Street, according to authorities.

Metra spokesman Michael Gillis said Train 301 was traveling along the Union Pacific/North line just south of the Main Street station when it struck the man at about 1 a.m.

Atrail White, whose address is unknown, was pronounced dead at 1:40 a.m. at Evanston Hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. An autopsy performed this afternoon found he died from multiple injuries and ruled his death a suicide.

Train 301 was scheduled to depart Chicago at 12:35 a.m. and arrive in Kenosha, Wis., at 2:15 a.m., according to the Metra website. It was delayed nearly three hours after the man was struck.

The Evanston Police Department is investigating the incident, according to the Metra website. Evanston Police Cmdr. Jay Parrott confirmed a man was hit by a train but could not provide further information.
