Northwestern student who fell from fraternity window still in critical condition

The Northwestern student who fell out of a third-floor window at the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity house remains in critical but stable condition, according to hospital and University officials.

Weinberg junior Matthew Cooney was taken to Evanston Hospital on Tuesday morning and underwent successful surgery later that night. He was critically injured at the time.

Hospital spokeswoman Andrea Mitchell said Cooney’s condition did not change over the weekend. Critical but stable condition usually means patients are not at risk of death but expected to stay in the hospital until their health improves.

Fire officials believe Cooney was not able to leave his room in the fraternity house and was looking for another way out before he fell.

University Police is investigating the incident.

Mitchell had no further information on Cooney’s condition.
