Police: Family friend sexually abused 9-year-old Evanston girl

A family friend has been charged with inappropriately touching a 9-year-old girl, Evanston police said this morning.

Richard Coleman, 57, of the 1600 block of Eagle Grove Court in Wheeling, Ill., sexually abused the girl last summer while he stayed at her family’s home in Evanston, according to Evanston police. Authorities tracked him down after the girl alerted a social worker at her school in May.

The social worker notified the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, which tipped off Evanston police. Both authorities from Evanston and Wheeling worked on the investigation, which found that Coleman had also inappropriately touched the girl while she visited his home in Wheeling.

Coleman faces a felony count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse. He is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.
