Medical examiner’s office: Cause, manner of brothers’ deaths ‘pending further investigation’

Autopsies were completed today on slain Evanston brothers Azim and Mobeen Hakeem, but the cause and manner of their deaths are “pending further investigation,” according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Azim Hakeem, 38, and Mobeen Hakeem, 34, were found shot to death Tuesday night in the basement of Evanston Pipe & Tobacco, 923 Davis St., police said. The brothers were likely working at the shop formerly run by their father when they were taken to the basement and shot multiples times, according to relatives.

The brothers’ mother could not reach them at some point Thursday and alerted authorities when she found a suspicious lock on the shop’s front door, the relatives said. Officers found the bodies when they went to check out the shop at about 8:30 p.m., according to police.

The medical examiner’s office declined to comment further. Police said today they have no new information to share about the investigation.
