Edward Cox’s article “Alderman: Evanston City Council to tackle ‘brothel law’ by June” is encouraging news in the fight for fair and affordable off-campus student housing. For too long Evanston’s archaic “brothel law” has been a policy failure, contributing to higher housing costs and diminished access to academic and community services. While we share President Schapiro’s belief that Alderman Wilson’s reform proposal can go further, we applaud his effort and believe it is a great step in the right direction. Along with the quality-of-life benefits of “brothel law” reform will be greater certainty and less confusion among Evanston residents, particularly Northwestern University (NU) students, and the real estate community. The North Shore – Barrington Association of REALTORS (NSBAR) will continue to be a leading voice in this debate, but the NU community must also join the charge. Northwestern students can take action on this important matter right now at: www.EvanstonBrothelLawFacts.com.
