Monday, Oct. 8

What: A Conversation with Alan Krueger

When: 4 to 5:15 p.m.

Where: McCormick Auditorium

Cost: Free, but students must register in advance.

Alan Krueger, chair of President Barack Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers, will speak as a part of the 2012 Institute for Policy Research’s Distinguished Public Policy Lecture.

 

Tuesday, Oct. 9

What: Mark Shields Lecture

When: 4 to 5:30 p.m.

Where: McCormick Tribune Center Forum

Cost: Free

Mark Shields, a columnist and commentator for “The PBS NewsHour” will speak about the 2012 presidential election.

 

Wednesday, Oct. 10

What: SHAPE Bonfire

When: 7 p.m.

Where: The Lakefill

Cost: Free

SHAPE, Sexual Health and Assault Peer Educators, will host its annual bonfire.

 

Thursday, Oct. 11

What: Block Museum of Art Fall Reception

When: 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Where: Block Museum of Art

Cost: Free

Head over to the Block Museum of Art to take a look at the fall exhibits and enjoy a reception.

 

Friday, Oct. 12

On Campus

What: A&O Productions Fall Blowout

When: 6:30 p.m.

Where: Welsh-Ryan Arena 

Cost: $10 for undergraduates and $15 for graduate students through the Norris Box Office

Nas and Young the Giant will perform at Welsh-Ryan for the annual Fall Blowout concert. WildCARDs will be checked at the entrance of the event.

 

In Chicago

What: Chicago International Film Festival

When: Oct. 11 to Oct. 25, times vary

Where: Various locations throughout Chicago

Cost: Individual tickets available for purchase, prices vary.

The 48th Chicago International Film Festival features movie screenings and panels that take place over the course of two weeks.

 

Saturday, Oct. 13

On Campus

What: A&O Productions: “Moonrise Kingdom”

When: 7 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Where: McCormick Auditorium

Cost: $3

A&O Films will show “Moonrise Kingdom” as part of its fall film series.

 

In Chicago

What: Open House Chicago 

When: Oct. 13 and 14, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. depending on the building

Where: Various locations around Chicago

Cost: Free

Sponsored by the Chicago Architecture Foundation, the event gives visitors the chance to check out more than 150 buildings throughout Chicago and look behind the scenes at mansions, theaters and hidden rooms. Information sheets for these self-guided tours are available on the Open House Chicago website. 

 

Sunday, Oct. 14

On Campus

What: Chicago Humanities Festival

When: 12 to 8:30 p.m.

Where: Various locations around Northwestern University

Cost: Free for teachers and students 

Northwestern will host events for the Chicago Humanities Festival.  There will be lectures and events throughout the day with special guests Yo-Yo Ma, a famous concert cellist; John Hodgman of “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” and Jeff Pinkner, former executive producer of “Lost,” “Fringe” and “Alias.”

 

In Evanston

What: Foster Senior Fashion Show

When: 3 to 6 p.m.

Where: Fleetwood-Jourdain Center, 1655 Foster St.

Cost: $10 

Watch senior citizens model different outfits and enjoy music and door prizes at the Foster Senior Club’s annual fundraising event. 

 

In Chicago

What: Latino Fashion Week: Paparazzi Glamour

When: 11 a.m.

Where: Zhou B Art Center, 1029 W. 35th St.

Cost: $25 with student ID

The final day of Latino Fashion Week features the Shoppers Fashion Lounge Expo, free of charge, and, with the purchase of a ticket, a runway show.
