Northwestern alum Matt Grevers set a new Olympic record of 52.16 seconds in the 100-meter backstroke Monday en route to a gold medal.
It was the first individual gold medal for the Lake Forest, Ill. native and the third in his career. The 2007 graduate won a silver medal Sunday after swimming in the heats of the 4Ջ100-meter freestyle relay. It was the fifth medal overall for Grevers after he won three medals in Beijing including the silver medal in the 100-meter backstroke.
Grevers has one more event in London, the 400-meter medley relay, which starts on Friday with the preliminaries. The final takes place Saturday.
