Former Northwestern quarterback Dan Persa re-injured his right Achilles tendon during a tryout with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers earlier this month which will require him to undergo a second surgery on the ankle according to the Chicago Tribune.
Persa went to visit David Porter, a foot and ankle specialist and an orthopedic consultant to the Colts at the behest of his agent Mike McCartney.
“(Porter) said my foot was at 65 percent,” Persa told the Tribune, “and during the season, it was probably at 50 percent. He said: ‘If you ever want it to be semi-normal again, you have to have another surgery.'”
The quarterback originally blew out his Achilles tendon after firing the winning touchdown pass against Iowa on Nov. 13, 2010, which forced him to miss the rest of that season and the first three games of the 2011 campaign.
The surgery is set to take place in August and could possibly end the football career of the NCAA’s most accurate passer.
“If football doesn’t work out,” Persa told the Tribune. “I’m OK with it.”
