Football coach Pat Fitzgerald announced Wednesday sophomore running back Adonis Smith has decided to leave the program.
“We’re disappointed to see Adonis leave Northwestern,” the coach said in a statement. “He is an outstanding young man, and we wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors.”
Smith played in 17 games and ran for 462 yards during his two years with the Wildcats. His best game came in the 2011 TicketCity Bowl, in which he ran for 61 yards on 11 carries. He was one of four true freshman to play in 2010 and was the team’s fourth-leading rusher in 2011 with 266 yards. All three of his touchdown carries came this past season.
