State Rep. Daniel Biss (D-Skokie) joined a panel of speakers for the last of Connections for the Homeless breakfast series Thursday.
Biss, Evanston housing planner Mary Ellen Poole and Connections executive director Paul Selden discussed Evanston’s plan to address homelessness and tackled several issues that could affect the enforcement of that plan. The breakfast was held at Lake Street Church, 1458 Chicago Ave., and sponsored by First Bank & Trust of Evanston.
Connections for the Homeless, a nonprofit organization that has been in Evanston since 1984, works with officials from Evanston and north suburban Cook County to help prevent residents from losing their homes and to help the homeless find new housing. They also offer employment and health services for the homeless.
Last year, Connections helped more than 230 people who are chronically homeless. The breakfast series, called Bring a Friend to Breakfast, began in October, and the organization has since held four events. The earlier events highlighted Connections’ Project 20, an “effort to house those that are at the greatest risk of dying within the year if they do not move off the streets,” according to its website.
