Three seniors from Northwestern’s football team received an opportunity to showcase their skills for the NFL.
Quarterback Dan Persa and offensive lineman Al Netter will play for the West in the East-West Shrine Game in St. Petersburg, Fla. The game on Jan. 21 will be broadcast on NFL Network, and all 32 NFL teams will have scouts at the game. Former Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress will coach the West team.
Persa was a two-time All-Big Ten quarterback and is the NCAA’s all-time leader in completion percentage. He led the conference with 237.6 passing yards per game, and his 155.0 quarterback rating ranks third all-time in the conference.
Netter started all 52 games at left tackle for the Wildcats and was a three-time All-Big Ten honorable mention. The two-time captain was a member of the 2011 Allstate/AFCA Good Works Team.
Former quarterback Mike Kafka was the last Wildcatto participate in the game, winning the Offensive Player of the Game honor in 2009.
Linebacker Bryce McNaul received an invitation to the inaugural NFLPA Collegiate Bowl. The Jan. 21 game is at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. McNaul had 76 tackles this season including six tackles-for-loss.
NU sent two players to all-star games last season with defensive lineman Corbin Bryant and linebacker Quentin Davie going to the NFLPA All-Star Game in San Antonio.
