Men’s Golf: Chun’s seventh-place finish helps Cats stay out of last

The Northwestern men’s golf team completed the Gifford Collegiate tournament in San Martin, Calif., Wednesday with its best day of the tournament to finish 10th out of 11 teams and avoid a last-place finish heading into the winter offseason. The Wildcats’ strong last round was hampered by the modified scoring system of the Gifford. Fifth-place NU golfer Sam Chien’s 8-over 79 counted towards the team total due to the unusual scoring, which tallied the top five scores out of six instead of the usual top four of five. The Cats’ top player, Eric Chun, kept his recent hot play going with another solid day for an excellent three-day line of 69-73-72. Those scores yielded a 1-over total, good for seventh place, the third top-10 finish of his impressive fall season. For the individual title, USC’s Steve Lim held off the world’s top-ranked amateur, Patrick Cantlay of UCLA, to win by one stroke at 11-under. The Cats now have the winter off from competition before starting their spring season at the Big Ten Match Play Championships in the relative warmth of Florida on February 10th.
