During the holiday season Evanston police increased traffic enforcement as part of a Holiday Traffic Enforcement Initiative, according to an Evanston police news release.
The purpose of the extra enforcement, which began Dec. 17 and ended Sunday, was to prevent traffic accidents. Police officers increased enforcement particularly during nighttime and rush hours.
Police paid special attention to seat belt violations and drivers under the influence, according to the release. During the two-week enforcement period, 37 seat belt violations were recorded, as well as two DUI arrests. Police also handed out 28 cell phone violations.
There will be additional enforcement campaigns in the future, according to the release.
