Sheridan Road construction will halt until spring

Northwestern students, faculty and staff will get a welcome reprieve from annoying Sheridan Road construction, starting next Monday.

That marks the start of the work’s winter shutdown.

The construction is part of Illinois’ Sheridan Road Rehabilitation Project, to be completed in seven stages by the end of July 2011. All campus construction halted for about three weeks in July as a result of labor and operator union strikes.

Campus Drive will accommodate only one lane for both inbound and outbound traffic Tuesday and Wednesday while the road is repaved. A flagman will be posted both days to direct traffic.

On Nov. 15, winter construction shutdown will commence. The date also marks the completion of the fourth stage of the rehabilitation project. The shutdown is planned to last from Nov. 15 through March 15, 2011. For those four months all lanes on Sheridan Road will be open to traffic.

During the winter shutdown the Sheridan/Foster Shuttle stop will be moved 20 feet south from its current location, while water pipes are installed. No changes will be made to the rest of the route stops or the shuttle schedule.
