Style Watch: Meet me at the crossroads

When Emma Aubry Roberts isn’t busy updating her fashion blog, La Vie en Ginger, or interning at places like SELF Magazine, you can find her working at Crossroads Trading Co., the quality secondhand men’s and women’s clothing store located on Sherman Avenue. Fashion is a huge interest and hobby for the Weinberg senior, who cites “Sex and the City” protagonist Carrie Bradshaw as her style icon. A big fan of vintage clothing, Roberts says 90 percent of her wardrobe comes from thrift stores.

Because flipping through the endless racks at Crossroads might seem like an impossible task, Roberts gives a few tips on how to tackle the piles of clothing and uncover a one-of-a-kind outfit.

Shop often. “We get tons and tons of new clothes in every day, ” she says. “The good stuff goes fast.”

Don’t forget the men’s section. Because female shoppers greatly outnumber their male counterparts, the men’s section is full of hidden gems. “A lot of the time, you can find really high-end labels,” Roberts says.

When bringing in clothes to trade in or sell, ask yourself if your things are better-suited for donating to places like The Salvation Army. Buyers look for items that are in good used condition from the past year. “[Crossroads] is not a great place to dump all your falling-apart clothes,” she says. “If you don’t want something, there’s a good chance, they won’t want it either.”

For Roberts, style isn’t just throwing on an outfit that looks good - it’s also a confidence-builder.

“Every day is an opportunity to costume yourself,” Roberts says. “Once you force yourself to get dressed up, you’ll feel a lot better than you thought you would.”
