At Wednesday’s senate meeting, the Associated Student Government appointed new members to the Student Groups Committee and made strides toward selecting a new student groups vice president .
The senate voted to appoint Barry McCardel, the senator for A&O Productions, to the selection committee for a new SGVP. The position has been occupied by three people in a year and a half, McCardel said.
“There has been a lot of turnover in this position,” the Communication senior said. “It’s got to be someone with the experience to know how to set up this position to succeed.”
The SGVP oversees the SGC, which provides guidance to and makes funding recommendations for B- and T-status student groups. It also runs the fall and winter activities fairs, ASG President Claire Lew said. The SGVP also sits on the ASG executive board.
After the meeting, the SESP senior said the high turnover has been due to “the sheer amount of work that goes into the job.”
“You really need a lot of passion for the job you’re doing,” she said. “You’re looking at a good 30 hours or more a week.”
The senate also passed a resolution affirming ASG’s support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students at Northwestern and across the country, in light of recent bullying incidents at other schools.
