Evanston will host its Annual Bike the Ridge ride Oct. 3. Ridge Avenue will be closed to vehicles between Howard and Church streets for the ride, which will take place between 9 a.m. and noon. NU students and their neighbors can ride bikes along Ridge in lanes normally reserved for drivers.
In the morning Evanston Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl will kick off the community event, which will include a farmers market, a mini-concert, a bike registration booth and a bike decorating station, among other activities. Local restaurants and businesses have donated giveaways and food to sell.
Bike the Ridge has been held each October since 2008. It was created to help promote community and environmental consciousness and to change the notion that Evanston is not a “bike-friendly” city. It was also designed to promote bike safety, especially among NU students who sometimes ride their bikes illegally on the downtown sidewalks.
