Suspicious male in yellow car approaches juvenile
A juvenile in a Northwestern summer program was approached by a male in a yellow car who attempted to lure the juvenile into his car around 3 p.m. July 8. While the juvenile was walking north toward Norris University Center from 1897 Campus Drive, the offender reportedly said, “If you are interested in an escort service, I can take you anywhere you want.” The University Police Department reported that the offender was described as a 20- to 30-year-old dark-skinned male with stubble on his face and an accent. They reminded community members to immediately report suspicious activity to UPD or the Evanston Police Department.
Police catch auto burglar after foot chase in Evanston
Evanston Police Department officers apprehended a burglar later identified as DeWitt West Sayles at approximately 5:37 a.m. Sunday after a citizen reported the suspicious behavior of a subject trying to open car doors, Commander Tom Guenther said in a report released by EPD.
At approximately 4:16 a.m., officers responded to the 1300 block of Ashland, where the suspicious subject fled from on foot. After being apprehended by officers at South Boulevard and Chicago Avenue later that morning, Sayles admitted to running from police. A search of Sayles concluded in officers finding various gift cards associated to people other than Sayles and electronic items, including two iPods and a GPS system, EPD said.
The victims whose cars had been burglarized were informed of the thefts and the items were returned. During an interview with Sayles, officers gained information related to various other vehicle burglaries in Evanston and other areas, EPD said.
Sayles was charged with three counts of felony burglary to vehicle and additional misdemeanors.
