The Evanston History Center will host its 35th Annual Mother’s Day House Walk on Sunday, featuring a self-guided tour of five private homes, the Frances Willard House, the Dawes House and the Woman’s Club of Evanston.
Eden Juron Pearlman, EHC’s director, said this year’s house walk will focus on significant Evanston women, both contemporary and historical figures. Participants of the house walk are also encouraged to visit the center’s “Lifting as We Climb” exhibit on the history of Evanston women.
One of the historical homes includes Louise Mead’s former residence.
The NU alumna, with the help of two other NU graduates, created the nation’s first radio soap opera, “Clara, Lu and Em.”
Pearlman said participants will take part in self-guided tours of these buildings between 12 p.m. and 5 p.m. Volunteers will be available to help as well.
About 600 people attend the house walk each Mother’s Day, Pearlman said.
“We have done this for 35 years, and people come year after year,” Pearlman said. “When someone calls to buy a ticket, they’ll say ‘This is my 15th year, and now, the last three years I’ve been going with my sister-in-law, too.’ What I love is that it’s an Evanston tradition.”– Erin Kim
