Fast food restaurant could open on Sherman

A new Ultimate Chicken Bar, a quick-serve restaurant for chicken take-out, could open on 1739 Sherman Ave.

The Zoning Board of Appeals voted 6-0 Tuesday night to recommend approval to the Evanston City Council for a special use permit for the restaurant.

The restaurant would replace Gary Poppins Popcorn, currently at that location.

Brandon Sartor, the restaurant’s owner, made his case before the Zoning Board of Appeals and said the restaurant would serve grilled chicken and teriyaki rice bowls in order to cater to a more health-conscious age demographic between 18 and 25 years-old.

As a condition of the board’s approval, the restaurant will be responsible for disposing of all garbage within 250 feet of the establishment, whether or not its customers are the ones littering. Sartor plans to hire 10 to 15 part-time employees, all of whom must park in nearby parking garages and not at street meters to avoid congestion.

Businesses near that part of Sherman Avenue expressed concerns over the cooking smells of the restaurant, but Sartor reassured the board that he would not use any fryers and blow out the exhaust from other cooking utilities using hoods.
