Andrew Gruen, Medill ’07, has been selected as a 2009-2010 Luce Scholar and will be the recipient of a Gates Cambridge Scholarship to fund his doctorate in sociology.
As one of 18 Luce scholars, Gruen will spend ten months in Asia working at an internship placement through the Asia Foundation. His placement has yet to be determined, but will be based on his interests and qualifications. When Gruen returns, he will pursue his doctorate at the University of Cambridge.
Gruen was also a Gates Scholarship recipient in 2008, and has spent the past year on the Cambridge Politics, Psychology, Sociology and International Studies faculty. Through his research, Gruen hopes to gain an understanding of how societies shape media, he said. A specific area of interest is citizen journalism and its success in South Korea.
“Rarely is anyone lucky enough to get to study what they’re interested in with the brightest minds in the world,” Gruen wrote in an e-mail. “This year at Cambridge and the next few in Asia and the U.K. are absolute gifts.”
