Women’s Fencing: Senior goes perfect to take foil gold medal in strong home showing

Senior Sam Nemecek went a perfect 11-0 and won the women’s foil to lead a strong Northwestern showing at the Remenyik Open at the Sports Pavilion and Aquatic Center.

Nemecek defeated Radmilla Sarkisova 15-10 in the finals Sunday.

The tournament was open to college fencers as well as area fencing organizations.

The Wildcats had more than half of the top-10 finishers in the foil division, led by Nemecek and a group of four freshmen. Devynn Patterson led the newcomers with a fourth place finish. Ariel Stein placed sixth and Rebecca Grohman came in eighth.

NU had good showings in the other events.

Junior Joanna Niklinska went 8-1 to finish third in women’s epee, falling to Eleanor Leighton of the Indiana Fencing Academy 15-12 in the semifinals. Junior Christa French finished fifth.

Sophomore Liz Sachs led the team in the women’s sabre with a fifth place finish. Junior Allie Keller and Whitney White ended the day in ninth and tenth place.
