With thefts from the Technological Institute, the Music Administration Building and University Library, campus crime didn’t leave with students for the summer.
Some of the more notable incidents on campus and in Evanston since June include:
June 30A Pontiac minivan was set on fire at the corner of Central Street and Bryant Avenue. Officers found an unknown substance splattered inside of the van after the fire had been put out, said Commander James Picket of the Evanston Police Department. At the time of the incident, the vehicle had been booted for parking violations.
Late June/Early JulyA small string of credit card thefts hit University Library. On June 30, a Northwestern student left her backpack unattended in the Reference Room for two hours, according to NU Police Department Assistant Chief Dan McAleer. The student said that nothing was out of place when she returned, but was later informed that two of her credit cards had been charged with amounts of $500 and $1,500. She later discovered two more credit cards missing. There were no suspects or witnesses.
Another woman reported her wallet missing on July 3. She claimed that the only time her wallet had been out had been the day before at 1 p.m. to get books from the library. She later discovered that an unauthorized purchase had been made at a gas station, as well as a $1,000 charge at a clothing store.
July 8A NU faculty member reported that a 22-inch LCD Samsung computer monitor had been stolen from his locked classroom in the M wing of the Technological Institute, 2145 Sheridan Road. The faculty member told police he was the only person with access to the room and that the door was locked, but there was no sign of forced entry.
July 19A man was seen urinating on the side of Sheridan Road, according to McAleer. He was stopped by an officer and surrendered a Wisconsin driver’s license. He had lacerations on both legs but was unable to explain where he got them. He then handed officers a fake Illinois identification card, which was found to have an incorrect date of birth. When officers attempted to put the subject in handcuffs, he pulled away. The man was charged with public urination, possession of a fake ID and resisting arrest.
August 11A male suspect was arrested after a building at 739 Brummel St. was set on fire, Pickett said. The fire only damaged the first floor units, and all occupants escaped without injury. The suspect has been charged with aggravated arson and attempted murder in connection to the fire, though no motive has been identified.
August 29A subject walking with his friends at the corner of Case Street and Custer Avenue was approached by a group of males. One of the men hit the subject with a two-by-four, after which the perpetrators fled the scene. Police do not know whether the victim knew his attackers.
