The Multicultural Greek Council and the National Pan-Hellenic Council may receive seats in Senate if an amendment to Associated Student Government’s constitution increasing the total number of senators passes.
ASG discussed the proposed amendment during its Wednesday night meeting. Executive Vice President Vikram Karandikar said a member of MGC’s executive board asked about the requirements to receive a Senate seat.
Right now, MGC and NPHC can only receive Senate seats by first petitioning to become A-status groups recognized by ASG and then applying for seats.
“It got me thinking about the process,” the McCormick sophomore said. “I saw that this was a disparity that needed to be addressed and that maybe going the student group route wasn’t right for a Greek council.”
Adding MGC and NPHC would expand the representation of NU’s student body within Senate, Karandikar said. It would also eliminate an unfair distinction between the groups and the Interfraternity Council and the Panhellenic Association, as each already has five senators, Karandikar said.
“Greeks represent 36 percent of this campus – they should all have an equal voice,” he said. “There’s no need to make a distinction between IFC and the (Multicultural) Greek Council in Senate.”
As the change is a constitutional amendment, there will be an open house before the next Senate session so students can express their thoughts on the potential addition.
Senators will vote on the measure in two weeks.
