NU will fund Saturday shuttles to downtown Chicago, acting upon a request made in Winter Quarter by the Undergraduate Budget Priorities Committee, Associated Student Government representatives announced earlier tonight.
“They funded the Saturday intercampus shuttle proposal! Woo-hoo!,” former ASG President Jonathan Webber, whose term ended tonight, wrote in a letter read aloud to the Senate by Speaker Jack Eichorst.
In an interview after the meeting, Webber clarified that the shuttle would not necessarily be an intercampus shuttle, saying that it could make multiple stops at downtown Chicago sites such as Millennium Park and Navy Pier.
ASG’s external relations committee first proposed the shuttles during Winter Quarter. An ASG poll posted on NULink in late January garnered almost 2,500 responses, with more than 98 percent in favor of such a service.
The committee’s initial proposal included operating a shuttle for eight hours, between 12 p.m. and 10 p.m. with a two-hour gap, at a cost of $6,554.80.
Al Cubbage, vice president for university relations, said he was unaware of the approval as he is not on the University Budget Committee, which will be funding the shuttle.
“I don’t doubt that you’re correct,” he said. “I just don’t have any information about it.”
A phone message was left Wednesday night at the home of Eugene Sunshine, senior vice president for business and finance.
More to come.
