David Schulz, a Northwestern professor of civil and environmental engineering, died Sunday at the age of 58.
Schulz founded the Infrastructure Technology Institute at the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, and served as the institute’s director until his death.
Professor Brian Moran, chairman of the Civil and Engineering Department at NU, said the university suffered a loss with Schulz’s death.
“Schulz was a wonderful contributor to our department and to this school,” he said. “He contributed substantially to our mission of undergraduate education at Northwestern.”
Moran said the development of institute was a benefit to both McCormick faculty and students alike.
“His directorship provided valuable research teaching opportunities,” he said. “Dave will be sorely missed by all of his friends at Northwestern.”
McCormick Associate Dean Joseph Schofer said Schulz made a “broad impact” at NU.
“He was a devoted teacher, an expert on transportation and public management, and an articulate spokesman for civil engineering and infrastructure,” Schofer said in a press release.
Schulz had been at NU since 1992, after previously serving as Milwaukee County Executive and deputy public works commissioner for the City of Chicago. He had also earned an MBA in public management from NU’s Kellogg School of Management.
Funeral services will be held Saturday in Shorewood, Wisc. Schulz is survived by his wife, Joann, and his son, Robert.
