ASG might bring free student copies of The New York Times to campus, said Communications Director Robby Stein.
NU would partner with The New York Times’ Knowledge Network, a program that would give the school newspapers, access to the paper’s archives and speakers on campus.
Although copies of The New York Times are available in dining halls, the partnership would make papers available to students who live off campus and who do not frequent the dining halls, Stein said.
“We might have some copies available at Norris, at the Starbucks, or other places on campus,” said the Medill senior and former Daily staffer.
Stein said The New York Times would provide the school with a “few hundred” access cards to TimesSelect, which would provide students with additional online content and articles from the paper’s archives dating back to 1851.
“It’s a pretty cool resource,” he said, adding that ASG would look at working with Medill professors to use the program as a resource for journalism classes.
Students also would have a chance to interact with journalists writing for the paper, Stein said. He said the New York Times would offer the university a chance to bring writers to campus to talk about their stories.
Stein said discussions with the New York Times were “very, very preliminary” and he does not expect the program to begin before the next academic year.
“It takes a long time to get these things into place,” he said.
The service is not free, and ASG has not yet looked at who would pay for the program. Stein said money could come from the Norris budget.
