When Rafael Martinez, a journalism graduate student, passed a sign reading “www.whatsgonnahappenhere.com,” on a boarded-up building at Chicago Avenue and Dempster Street, he made a mental note to visit the Web site later.
He forgot.
It wasn’t until a classmate brought up the site on her computer that he found out what the sign was about.
The developers of the building, at 1245 Chicago Ave., use the Web site to ask Evanston residents to speculate about what will occupy the vacant space. The owners already know, but for now they aren’t telling and are sitting back to watch goofy guesses pile up.
The goal is to build hype for development, said Stuart Rosenberg, one of the principal figures in the development.
“We love Evanston, but we think it has gotten a little bit sleepy,” Rosenberg said.
