It’s after midnight and suddenly hunger strikes. The restaurants in Evanston have been closed for hours and in a dorm down south, Lisa’s is just way too far to walk.
For South Campus residents, late-night snacking is no longer confined to burgers and chicken nuggets at the local Burger King. Starting Monday, the C-Store in 1835 Hinman will stay open until 2 a.m.
“Students were asking for something like Lisa’s. We are trying to accommodate the students down south,” said Javier Romero, executive chef for the Hinman dining hall.
The cafeteria also plans to keep the grill station – which offers made-to-order sandwiches and pizzas as well as hamburgers, fries and grilled cheese – open late into the night.
The grill will switch to extended hours as soon as a late-night cook is hired, which Romero said he hopes will be in about two weeks.
The C-Store will offer late-night service five days a week, possibly Sunday through Thursday or Monday through Friday. Exact days have not been set. Romero said the staff is waiting to gauge what days will be best for students.
South Campus students said they are ready for the new dining choice.
“I think it has been a long time coming,” said Weinberg sophomore Jeremy Kross, a Hinman resident.
Kross said he is looking forward to having another option besides the late-night restaurants in Evanston.
“(South campus residents) have more options because of Evanston, but it’s pretty far when it’s late,” Kross said. “(The C-Store) is probably healthier, too.”
Not all agreed that the extended food service would have a positive effect on their health.
“I don’t like to eat that late, but it might be a little tempting,” said Medill freshman Tessa Miller.
But for students like Alex Stack, a meal plan will be a deterrent from visiting the late night cafe.
“I don’t think it will change my eating habits because of the points I have,” the McCormick sophomore said.
Romero said the staff is waiting to gauge students’ responses before making any renovations or expansions to the dining area. A portion of the dining hall seating area will stay open, starting immediately, to create an atmosphere conducive to eating and studying.
Hinman is currently the only south campus cafeteria that will offer extended hours, Romero said. Allison and Foster-Walker have no plans to do so.
Although even Romero agreed that the Hinman C-Store and grill station is no Lisa’s Caf
