Beating the boys (women’s tennis)

A lot of kids grew up playing in their backyards, anything from touch football to soccer to a game of Wiffle Ball.

But when your backyard is London’s most prestigious country club, you tend to focus on one sport.

“We lived in the backyard of Wimbledon,” said senior tennis player Cristelle Grier. “I used to be able to creep through a hole in the fence and sneak onto the grounds.”

It’s no wonder that Grier has been playing the sport since before Lindsay Davenport was “Lindsay Davenport.”

But even with Boris Becker’s record-breaking match going on just yards from her home, Grier’s athletic nature attracted her to more than just tennis.
