The Wildcats spent the vast majority of last Saturday’s practice scrimmaging, meaning it was finally time to see the quarterbacks in action.

When the scrimmage was finished, it was fairly obvious, for at least that day, C.J. Bacher and Mike Kafka had distanced themselves from Andrew Brewer.

Bacher was the first quarterback to get a shot, but Walker said it didn’t mean he is listed as the starter at this point. The sophomore finished the day 3-for-7 passing for 34 yards. Kafka was 7 of 15 for 62 yards with one touchdown, and Brewer finished the day 2 for 9 for 22 yards.

Although Brewer short-hopped his receivers multiple times, he proved he is the best runner of the trio as gained 52 yards on the ground. But Kafka proved he could get down the field as well with a few scampers.

The three quarterbacks worked with the first and second teams throughout the practice.

“We need to have all those drills too, but it’s nice just getting out here, going full speed and being live,” Bacher said.

It doesn’t look like there’s a chance the quarterback battle will be solved in the spring. Even so, after Saturday you could tell the young quarterbacks were feeling some pressure.

“Those guys made some plays and did some things well,” Walker said. “But there are things we still need to work on.”

SPRINGING BACK

Terrell Jordan was set to be Northwestern’s starting running back last year, but he was plagued by injuries last spring and into the season and had to watch freshman Tyrell Sutton take over the running game.

With Sutton cemented as the starter, Jordan is now either competing for a back-up role or possibly the No. 2 back if the Cats decide to move to a two-back set, which they practiced Saturday.

Jordan has looked like he’s back to form all spring and really broke out in the scrimmage Saturday.

“It’s good to see him back,” Walker said. “He adds something to our football team. – His injuries the last couple years hurt us.”

TRADING SPACES

Last season Chris Malleo made the move from quarterback to R-back. While he is listed as a fullback/tight end this spring, he had some work at linebacker on Saturday.

He didn’t look too out of place, and he proved he could make some hits.
