Between 30 and 40 students were cited early Friday morning at the Mark II Lounge after Chicago police officers conducted ID checks, several students told THE DAILY.
Police went to the Deuce, 7436 N. Western Ave., at about 1:30 a.m. because of a fight outside the bar, according to the Chicago Police Department.
Three Chicago residents told police two men bumped into them outside of the bar. The two groups argued and a fight began, police said. The two men jumped into a car and drove away, police said. No Northwestern students were involved.
Because of the fight, police officers had to perform a liquor license check of the bar, police said, meaning they were required to confirm that all of the bar’s patrons were 21-years-old or older.
Officers blocked the three exits of the bar and asked patrons for IDs, students said. One student said about 30 people were detained. Some students were taken downtown where they were given citations for alcohol violations, like being a minor in a tavern.
The exact number of citations issued by Chicago police was not available Sunday.
The owner of the Deuce was not available for comment.
