Without losing itself in the spreadsheets of big numbers and bigger dollar signs, Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room relays the story of the largest financial fraud in history as a tragicomedy, and it works.
Director Alex Gibney and friends have packed this DVD with deleted scenes, excellent interviews and a truly informative director’s commentary, making the whole package engaging, enraging and entirely entertaining..
The making-of documentary, We Should All Ask Why, explains how these filmmakers-turned-detectives pieced together their interviews, evidence and testimonies. Two conversations with the authors of the original book, upon which the documentary is based, complement not only the film but the numerous features as well.
The DVD also includes an episode of Higher Definition that discussed the documentary; a radio broadcast, by Firesign Theatre, that pokes fun at the fall of Enron; three sizable articles featured in Fortune magazine and a gallery of comical cartoons about the Enron scandal.
If the film leaves you wanting more, then the DVD will give you no reason to complain.
