In a technological era when the bounds of modern medicine appear to be endless, debates rage over the effects of new practices. As new medicinal procedures surface, they encounter a sea of doubt over their ethical and physical consequences.
Renowned for their fearlessness in tackling controversial issues, Stage Left Theatre, 3408 N. Sheffield Ave., has depicted everything from a siege in Sarajevo to an IRA-themed Romeo and Juliet. Stage Left now ventures into the medicinal sphere with Echoes of Another Man.
Award-winning playwright Mia McCullough, whose work has appeared at Stage Left, Steppenwolf Theatre Company and the Cincinnati Shakepeare Festival, brings her tale of the world’s first brain transplant to the Windy City.
McCullough’s story chronicles the journey of a famous artist whose brain is tranplanted into the body of a young professional golfer.
Literally an artist trapped in a golfer’s body, the protagonist wrestles with leftovers from his new body’s previous owner. Caught in a veritable love triangle, the protagonist struggles with the direction his newly acquired heart takes him.
Struggling with numerous metaphysical questions, McCullough focuses on the soul-body relationship. She examines the boundaries of the soul and whether memory and love are a function of mind or body.
Echoes of Another Man is playing until Nov. 5. Tickets cost between $5 and $22. Tickets and showtimes are available by calling (773) 883-8830.
