A new assistant director of fraternity and sorority life was announced Wednesday afternoon, bringing to an end a two-month search for a candidate.
Erin Huffman was selected from a pool of 78 resumes by a search committee that consisted of students, staff and House Directors, said Kyle Pendleton, director of fraternity and sorority life. Huffman was selected because of her past experience in Greek life, which includes being a member of Delta Gamma and working for Delta Gamma fraternity as a collegiate development consultant and internal director of expansion.
“Erin will bring an innovative approach and new ideas to the continuing process with sorority recruitment,” Pendleton said. He added that many students on the search committee “really liked her.”
Huffman, who just completed work on her master’s degree at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, said she became interested in the position after various students and professionals at Northwestern encouraged her to apply.
“After I came to campus and had the on-campus interviews, I continued to be very excited and very pleased with the position,” Huffman said.
Students expressed an interest in Huffman shaping their Greek experiences which further encouraged her to accept the position.
“I was interested in students who wanted to take the initiative and better their own community,” Huffman said.
As assistant director, Huffman will supervise the Greek Student Counselor program and advise the Interfraternity Council and 30 fraternity and sorority chapters. She will also be responsible for supporting Pendleton in other educational initiatives.
Huffman’s first day will be June 20 and her first task will be attending the summer Big 10 Greek Advisors conference.
The position opened April 1, when the former assistant director of fraternity and sorority life, Mark Manderino, accepted a job at the Alumni Association. Since Manderino’s departure, Carol Ben-Davies has assisted Pendleton by coordinating the Greek Student Counselor program.
Greek life is a positive experience, Huffman said, as it develops leadership and interpersonal skills, as well as supporting important facets of college life that go beyond the collegiate years.
“I think Greek life offers undergraduates as well as alumni a holistic experience,” Huffman said, adding that she has remained “highly involved” in her sorority since her undergraduate years.
