Northwestern’s doubleheader at Loyola was cancelled Tuesday due to inclement weather that hit the Chicago area.
And after hours of attempting to reschedule the games for today, both Loyola and NU decided not to play the neighborhood series, NU coach Kate Drohan said.
“We tried to reschedule the games for tomorrow since that’s the only open date for both teams this week,” Drohan said Tuesday. “But Loyola (as the home team) couldn’t secure umpires.”
If only Mother Nature could have held out for one more day.
But like Drohan said, you never know what type of weather you may get in Chicago.
“It’s funny the way weather works out around here,” Drohan said. “Monday it’s 65 degrees and sunny most of the day, and (Tuesday) it rains.”
The No. 18 Wildcats entered Tuesday with a 26-9 overall record and an 8-0 Big Ten record. Loyola, of the Horizon League, has not fared as well — the team is 10-20.
The Cats will most likely hold practice today, Drohan said, after not practicing for a week.
“We’ll at least try to get our outfield out there, and depending on how the field looks when we take the tarp off the infield, we’ll probably work on some other team things, if possible,” Drohan said.
Although the Cats didn’t get to play Loyola, they got in their fair share of offense last weekend.
As a result of her offensive production last weekend against Minnesota and Wisconsin, freshman shortstop Stephanie Churchwell was named the Big Ten Player of the Week on Monday.
During the four-game weekend, Churchwell went 12 for 15, scored seven runs, had six RBIs and hit one home run. Her average improved .32 points to .415 over the weekend.
This is the second week Churchwell has received this honor.
The Cats’ next scheduled game is at Indiana at 3 p.m. Friday.
