Greek organizations also plan to step up safety precautions on Dillo Day.
Members of the Risk Observation Management Team, which monitors registered Greek activities, and Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Association representatives will make rounds in the fraternity quads between 10 a.m. Saturday and 2 a.m. Sunday. Officials from the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life also will be on duty, according to Mark Manderino, area coordinator of Greek life.
Sgt. Steven Stoeckl of University Police spoke to IFC and Panhel representatives at the IFC forum Tuesday. He told them UP, Evanston police and Illinois state police will patrol Northwestern and the surrounding area on Dillo Day and warned the presidents to keep members, especially freshmen, in control and on chapter property.
“Keep them in the house, keep them in the yard, but do not let them walk to their cars or into the alley to urinate,” he said. “That’s usually where they get tickets.”
Some fraternity advisers also will check on their members’ houses throughout the day. Beta Theta Pi President Ray Bourdeau, a McCormick junior, said he expects his chapter’s alumni adviser will drop by unannounced at the request of Associate Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life Kyle Pendleton.
“Kyle Pendleton e-mailed all the chapter advisers and warned them about Dillo Day and urged them to have a stronger presence on campus,” Bourdeau said.
Sigma Phi Epsilon President Nick Johnson, a Communication junior, said despite Pendleton’s e-mail he does not expect the chapter’s adviser to visit their house on Dillo Day.
“We’ve maintained that (risk management) is something that can be and has been in the past handled by the undergraduate leaders of the fraternity,” he said.
Weinberg junior Chris Nakutis, president of Delta Upsilon fraternity, said he encouraged DU members to stay out of the chapter’s house because “the fraternity quads are such a hot spot for Dillo Day.”
“We never have a (wet) party in our house because we are a dry fraternity,” Nakutis said. “Even with the dry fraternities, although people don’t drink in the frats, there’s a tendency of fraternity members and non-fraternity members to localize around the areas of Bobb and Sargent and Slivka and where the frats are. If we keep our members out of our house, then we keep the party away from the fraternity quads.”
