The Chicago Tribune reported in an April 18 article that Rainbow Alliance members have been discussing the need for gender neutral bathrooms at Northwestern.
The article paraphrased Rainbow Alliance executive board member Sarah Wolff as saying the group is taking steps to push for the installation of such bathrooms on the Evanston Campus.
“Alliance members have been holding informal talks at the group’s campus offices as they consider how to press their case for more restroom options,” the article said.
Wolff said Tuesday that, to her knowledge, Rainbow Alliance has not pursued the issue.
“I talked about how it would be really amazing if NU were to implement gender neutral bathrooms,” said Wolff, a Music junior. “I don’t think that’s going to happen in the near future. Certainly it’s something to consider, but it’s not something we’ve been considering as of late.”
Ellen Bird, co-president of Rainbow Alliance, said group members have not addressed the issue of gender neutral bathrooms.
“It doesn’t seem to be an issue that many people at Northwestern are thinking about,” said Bird, a Weinberg sophomore.
Before gender neutral bathrooms are installed, NU needs to include the phrase “gender identity and expression” in its non-discrimination policy, Bird said.
